The Gilbert Family

Benjamin Gilbert contacted the American Lung Association nearly two years ago to find an opportunity for his Bar Mitzvah project.  Having suffered from Asthma since he was a child, Ben wanted to get his family involved in the 2007 Asthma 5K Run/Walk in South Carolina.  Ben's Friends Against Asthma Team, which include brother, Zachery, and parents, Mitch and Irene raised $2,000.  In addition, Ben recruited a second team from his school that raised $1,250.  As an example of his determination, Ben won his school's Highest Student Fundraiser Award.  Ben's Bar Mitzvah carried special meaning to his family, and American Lung Association staff who were invited were delighted to take part.

The Gilberts were bitten by the service bug.  Ben's Friends Against Asthma made a second appearance at the 2008 Asthma 5K Run/Walk, raising $1,450.  Parents, Irene and Mitch are now leadership volunteers for the Annual Oxygen Ball, already raising thousands of dollars.  Zachery's elementary school created a coin drive on behalf of the American Lung Association raising $685.  To date the Gilberts have raised $7,500 in two years.  The American Lung Association in South Carolina staff adore the Gilberts, and recognize their valuable contribution to the Association.

It is with great pride that the American Lung Association recognizes the Gilbert Family as Volunteers of the Week.
