Amanda Feldman

2006 American Lung Association/C. Everett Koop Unsung Hero Award Recipient

At the age of 18, Amanda Feldman is truly a rising star in the tobacco control movement. She began her work in tobacco control at the early age of 12, already a freshman in high school. She came across a newspaper article about a local effort in her county, Students Working Against Tobacco. Having no previous knowledge of the movement, Amanda decided to attend a meeting of the student group and became hooked. Soon after, New Jersey started a state youth anti-tobacco movement, Reaching Everyone By Exposing Lies (REBEL), with Amanda as a founding member. Through her participation in REBEL, she became active in middle school mentoring, media training and legislative advocacy. Simultaneously, Amanda worked with the Tobacco Age of Sale Enforcement program in her county and utilized her position as student council president of her high school to introduce and support new anti-tobacco efforts.

Amanda is currently serving as executive board member and treasurer of IGNITE, the first ever national, youth-led, youth-driven anti-tobacco movement. She also serves on the Youth Advisory Panel for The American Legacy Foundation and is an active youth advocate to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. She continues to lecture throughout the United States on the topic of youth overcoming the influences of Big Tobacco. Amanda's impressive work has resulted in her appointment to the New Jersey Governor's Advisory Council on Volunteerism and Community Service. She is the youngest person ever ever to serve on this advisory group.

Amanda's anti-tobacco message has had widespread impact on the well-being and health of her entire community. Her efforts serve the immediate and long-term needs of the community and consequently will have a lifetime influence. Amanda Feldman is not only a role model for her community but for the entire tobacco control movement. The American Lung Association and the C. Everett Koop Foundation are proud to recognize her outstanding leadership.
