Luis Rodriguez, MD, American Lung Association of the Northeast

Luis Rodriguez

Dr. Rodriguez joined the American Lung Association in New York City Board of Directors in 2006, continuing on through the American Lung Association in New York State/ American Lung Association in New York City merger and then through the American Lung Association in New York/ American Lung Association of the Northeast merger. He has served on the CEO Search Committee for American Lung Association in New York and on the Governance Committee from 2008 – 2010. He also served on the Merger Committee during the American Lung Association in New York/ American Lung Association of the Northeast merger process. In addition, Dr. Rodriguez has volunteered his time for seven years to educate hundreds of school nurses throughout New York City School District as part of the Open Airways for Schools program. During this same time he has volunteered to be the Spanish spokesperson for Rostros de la Gripe (Faces of Influenza), the Lung Association’s nationwide campaign that encourages influenza immunization among Hispanics.

The American Lung Association’s Strategic Plan Guiding Principle states “In its mission and its operations, the American Lung Association is committed to eliminating lung health disparities.” Dr. Rodriguez is a tireless advocate for underserved and diverse populations; consistently working to improve asthma education and care, pediatric tuberculosis, influenza, critical care and health care provider education – in the most diverse city in the world, New York City – where 36% of the population is foreign born and 800 different languages are spoken.

Dr. Rodriguez lives, works and breathes for the diverse communities and people that he deeply cares for. He is passionate about his work and he never fails to communicate that passion, in a quiet, unassuming yet powerful way to the staff, volunteers and leaders with whom he interacts at the Lung Association. He consistently reminds us of the healthcare and educational needs that are as yet unmet for the children and professionals with whom he works within these communities. Most importantly, Dr. Rodriguez offers us fresh strategies and his own time, energy and expertise to help meet those needs.

Dr. Rodriguez remains one of the American Lung Association’s most passionate volunteer advocates because he truly believes to his core that his vision for health care and the American Lung Association mission are united. When he speaks of the patients he cares for he uses terms such as “my families” and to him they are his.
