Isle of Wight County Joins Other Communities to Fight for Clean Air
Isle of Wight County has joined other concerned counties in the fight against Old Dominion Electric Company (ODEC) and their proposal to build a coal-fired power plant in Surry County, Virginia. The plant, if built, would be the largest coal-fired power plant in Virginia contributing to ground level ozone and particulate matter. Isle of Wight's adoption of an official resolution of opposition makes a strong statement that citizens are aware of the dangers and negative health impact that the downwind effects of this plant would pose to their county. Among these health concerns are an increased risk of asthma attacks, emphysema, infant mortality, lung cancer, and heart disease among many others. Children, the elderly, and those with lung disease will be especially susceptible to these negative effects. In addition to Isle of Wight, the cities of Williamsburg and Virginia Beach have adopted resolutions against construction of this power plant.
Throughout the state individuals are also taking a stand against the construction of this power plant in order to protect the health of all Virginians. Join in the fight against ODEC and sign this joint resolution today! Sign resolution.
