Jessica Vess

Jessica Vess, Event Co-Chair of the 2013 Austin Fight for Air Climb, is a shining example of volunteerism.

Jessica came to us via social media – she made a comment on our climb Facebook page and within weeks, was having coffee with our Leadership Council chairman, Ted Balistreri. She joined our council, and jumped in immediately to help with our 2012 FFAC.

Jessica is dynamic and beautiful, yet down-to-earth, funny and approachable. She is genuinely interested in everyone’s stories and is a natural recruiter. She and her husband, Jimmy, are advocates for healthy living – Jimmy is running the Livestrong marathon on behalf of the ALA. We call her the “energizer bunny.”   She is up around 2:30 a.m. for her job as the Daybreak Anchor on KVUE, and is done reporting by noon when she often stops by our ALA office to say hello to our volunteers or help with a task.  She is not above picking up a box of envelopes to stuff or hanging out to fold event t-shirts.

We are honored that Jessica Vess has agreed to Chair our 2013 Fight for Air Climb. As a volunteer for the 2012 Austin Climb, Jessica’s contributions were critical to our success. She secured media coverage on radio and TV interviews, recruited musicians, attracted sponsors and even secured a full sound stage in-kind donation. She was also our event MC! Jessica’s fresh ideas and sound insight are a solid foundation upon which to grow our Fight for Air Climb. As our 2013 Chair, Jessica has expanded our event committee to over 30 volunteers and is leading our event on a trajectory to break all previous recruiting and fundraising goals.

Jessica is passionate, dedicated, and always up for a new challenge. As the Daybreak and Midday News Anchor for KVUE, Jessica has watched rescue crews save a group of hikers lost in a cave, stood up against hurricanes and hail, and watched firefighters battle the blaze at the Governor’s Mansion. That story earned her an Emmy nomination. Originally from Houston, Jessica graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Houston and worked at the anchor desk of KAVU in Victoria, TX before moving to Austin.

We are proud to count Jessica Vess as a friend, supporter, and one of the brightest stars in our American Lung Association Austin Leadership Council!
