Tobacco Control – Does North Dakota Make the Grade?

(January 20, 2011)

The American Lung Association in North Dakota's State of Tobacco Control looks at how well states do at preventing tobacco use and helping smokers quit.  The report looks at four key areas—smokefree air, tobacco control program funding, cigarette taxes and coverage of tobacco cessation treatments and services.  North Dakota earned a "C" for its cessation policies, a "C" in smokefree air, and an "F" in cigarette tax.  On a positive note, North Dakota earned an "A" in tobacco prevention and control spending.

North Dakota’s tobacco control program is now in jeopardy.  The General Assembly is working to cut this program.  It is critical that North Dakota continue to invest money from tobacco settlement dollars, tobacco taxes or other sources to prevent our children from becoming addicted to tobacco and help adult smokers kick the habit. Studies have shown funding tobacco control programs at levels recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) saves lives and money. Please take a moment to send the attached letter to Governor Dalrymple to support maintaining funding for North Dakota’s investment in comprehensive tobacco control programs.
