Deborah "Debbie" Hughes

Deborah (Debbie) Hughes is a shining light in the eyes of those who live with lung disease and among those who promote healthy lungs.

Debbie has been a long time volunteer with the American Lung Association in NY and the former American Lung Association of the Finger Lakes.  She has raised funds for lung disease research through many of our events, including the Blow the Whistle on Asthma & Lung Disease Walk.

More than ten years ago, Debbie formed Rochester's Better Breather's Club.  To this day, it continues to prosper as a source of educational, emotional and social support for COPD patients.  Always with the best interest of her group in mind, she provides an environment where participants feel comfortable sharing their personal experiences and concerns, as well as, learning from guest speakers who cover such topics as new treatments and technology, the impact of new regulations on medical services such as Medicare; and, learning about available resources.  Debbie recognizes the need for fun and celebration too.   You may see her Better Breather's members enjoying a stroll through Sonnenberg Gardens or celebrating Valentine's Day---chocolate included.

During the last two years, Debbie has become involved with the Sea Puffers, a group that provides travel opportunities for those on oxygen.  She has gone on two trips so far with duties including teaching classes on coping with lung disease to being on call 24/7 for emergency situations.

Debbie’s “light” quietly shines.  She gives with her whole heart and is respected and loved by those who have been recipients of her warm, caring way.  Many of our neighbors with lung disease have indeed been able to “breathe easier “ due to Debbie’s generous efforts!
