The American Lung Association in New York is fighting for healthy lungs and clean air for all New Yorkers.  That's why we support legislation to create smokefree parks and beaches all across the state.

Secondhand smoke is a hazardous substance containing more than 4,000 chemicals, more than 50 of which are known or suspected to cause cancer. In fact, the U.S. Surgeon General has declared that there is no "risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke."

Beginning May 23, 2011, all New York City public parks, beaches and pedestrian plazas will be smokefree.  Download a brochure that explains New York City's new smokefree law here

While New York City's new law will go a long way toward protecting city residents and visitors from the dangers of secondhand smoke, there are still areas in New York state where smoking is allowed at public parks, beaches and other recreational areas.

What can you do?  Join our effort by sending a letter to your state elected officials urging the passage of legislation that would make all public parks and beaches in the state smokefree.

With your support, the Lung Association will help to ensure that every state resident, from Long Island to Buffalo, can visit any public recreational area in the state and enjoy clean, healthy, smokefree air.
