(January 8, 2008)

Statement from the American Lung Association of New York State

Governor Spitzer and Lt. Governor Paterson have once again shown their commitment to smart, progressive health care concepts through yesterday’s announcement of $14.5 million in one-year development grants to support stem cell research and training.

Innovative stem cell research provides millions of New Yorkers with the possibility of cures and vaccines to a host of lung health ailments.

The American Lung Association of New York State applauds the efforts of Governor Spitzer and all of our statewide elected officials in moving New York to the forefront of the nation in stem cell research and scientific study.

The American Lung Association supports the concept that research should be conducted ethically and on the basis of scientific merit, and today's grants further these important goals while, at the same time, helping to ensure that this research is conducted in a legal and ethical manner.
