NEW YORK -- The American Lung Association released its annual State of the Air report Wednesday. Many New York counties and cities received failing grades, including New York City, Saratoga, Westchester and Niagara.

The report indicates that half of the country has too much air pollution, although many metropolitan areas showed some improvement over last year. The study measured levels of smog and particle pollution, both of which can intensify respiratory illnesses.

The ALA found that the New York City area had improved its pollution grade slightly in 2010. Essex and St. Lawrence County, by contrast, were both ranked in the top 25 cleanest counties in the nation.
