Canandaigua Messenger Post: Excellus grant helps pay for asthma programs in schools

(December 14, 2010)

A $5,000 grant from Excellus BlueCross BlueShield will help the American Lung Association in New York continue to offer its asthma education program in elementary schools.

The Open Airways for Schools (OAS) program teaches children ages eight to 11 how to manage their asthma so they can lead healthier, more active lives. Asthma is a chronic lung disease that is especially serious in children, who may experience coughing, chest tightness, wheezing and trouble breathing.
The grant will pay for educational materials and a peak-flow meter for each student, which helps children keep their asthma under control. More than 2,000 children from about 30 Rochester-area schools have completed the OAS program.
