Manhattan: The American Lung Association in New York applauds Health Commissioner Thomas Farley for speaking out against the new R.J. Reynolds "Camel Break Free" cigarette campaign featuring Williamsburg ("New York City's health commish lights into Brooklyn Camel cigarettes," Nov. 17).

Exposure to cigarette advertising is a primary cause of youth smoking initiation. The tobacco industry continues to spend billions of dollars every year on marketing activities to manipulate youth perceptions and create a false impression of the social acceptability of tobacco use.

It is crucial that we continue enacting state and local efforts that reduce tobacco use and exposure to dangerous secondhand smoke. We need to counter the deceptive messages that smoking is cool or sexy and convey the realities of smoking - that it will kill you.
