The American Lung Association in Minnesota's COPD Educator Course provides healthcare professionals with a thorough overview of COPD information. The course will include practical information healthcare providers can use in their work with COPD patients. Specific attention will be given to smoking cessation, spirometry, COPD management, medication guidelines, end of life issues, pulmonary rehabilitation, oxygen therapy and reducing readmissions.

Who: This course is designed for advanced practice nurses, respiratory therapists, internal medicine nurses, pulmonary nurses, pharmacists and care managers.

Course Description:

After the program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Recognize that COPD is preventable and treatable and increasing in prevalence
  2. Recognize COPD risk factors and prevention strategies including smoking cessation
  3. Distinguish the role of spirometry testing for the identification and management of  COPD
  4. Describe current evidence-based guidelines to improve the care of COPD patients
  5. Understand principles for selection of appropriate oxygen therapy devices
  6. Understand how stress, depression and anxiety impact the COPD patient and the role of palliative care/ hospice care
  7. Demonstrate proper technique for medication delivery devices
  8. Explain how pulmonary rehabilitation and self-management skills can improve quality of life for a COPD patient
  9. Review risk factors and discuss interventions to reduce COPD readmissions

Cancellation Policy:

Registration fee refundable, less a $25 processing fee, prior to October 16, 2012.  No refunds after October 16, 2012. Substitutions are permitted. Registration confirmations will emailed.

Continuing Education Credits:

The ALAMN COPD Educator Course is designed to meet continuing education requirements for a variety of healthcare professionals. Presenter objectives, qualifications, and a certificate of attendance will be distributed to all participants.
This program has been designed to provide 12 contact hours and meets the Minnesota Board of Nursing continuing education requirements.  However, the individual is responsible for determining whether this activity meets the requirements for acceptable continuing education.
This program is approved by the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy for 10 hours of continuing education credit.

This program has been designed to provide 10 contact hours and meets the continuing education requirements of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice for respiratory care practitioners.
