About Open Airways For Schools

The American Lung Association's Open Airways For Schools is the most widely recognized asthma management program for children in the nation, and a proven-effective way to improve asthma self-management skills, decrease asthma emergencies, and raise asthma awareness among families and school personnel.  

Open Airways For Schools is a school-based curriculum that educates and empowers children through a fun and interactive approach to asthma self-management.  It teaches children with asthma ages 8-11 how to detect the warning signs of asthma, avoid their triggers and make decisions about their health.

How to Become an Open Airways Facilitator

The facilitator training is divided into two steps:

Step 1 - completion of the online self-paced modules Asthma Basics and the Facilitator Training Module.  Completion of each module and the evaluation form is required to move to step 2.

Step 2 - completion of a Follow-up Online Skill Building Webinar with a Certified OAS trainer.  Follow-up Online Skill Building Webinar sessions occur the second Wednesday of most months from 3 - 5 pm. The entire list of dates can be found here.

Certification Fee: Free with purchase of curriculumn.

You will need to complete the following steps in this order to be trained as an OAS facilitator:

  • Apply to Become a Facilitator - Complete the online registration process and turn in ALL the paperwork (agreements and background check) provided in your confirmation email.
  • Complete the Online Training Modules - You will be sent an access code to the online training modules (Athma Basics and the Facilitator Training Module) once your paperwork is received.
  • Complete a Follow-up Skill Building Webinar - You will need to complete a final session with an ALA Certified OAS Trainer who will issues your certification.
  • Access to a Facilitator Kit - If you do not already have one, you will need to purchase a facilitator’s kit that includes the curriculum guide and poster book.

Please note this specific registration process applies to Virginia, Maryland and District of Columbia applicants only.  Individuals outside these states will need to contact their local office for information on their specific trianing process.
