November is COPD Awareness Month

Up to 24 million Americans show impaired lung function, which is common among those with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), the third leading cause of death in the United States. It’s a staggering number, made more so by the fact that only about half of them have been diagnosed. More than 12 million Americans have been diagnosed with COPD, while an estimated 12 million more have it, but have not been diagnosed.

The American Lung Association has helped provide information and support to people with lung diseases for over a century. This year, during COPD Awareness Month, the Lung Association in Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia is partnering with Quality DME, a nationally accredited durable medical equipment provider specializing in sleep and respiratory therapy equipment, to raise awareness about COPD.

Tell Us Your Story and See the Washington Redskins play the Baltimore Ravens

Do you or someone you know suffer from COPD, asthma, or some other lung disease?  Are you a football fan?  Would you like to attend the Redskins – Ravens game on December 9 at FedEx Field?  Thanks to Quality DME, four lucky people will be sitting on the 40 yard line on December 9 to see the Redskins and Ravens battle it out in this regional rivalry.

To be eligible, all you have to do is tell us your personal story about your battle with lung disease, or that of a friend or loved one, and what attending this game would mean for you or that friend or loved one.  If your story is selected, you or the person whose story you’ve submitted will earn two tickets to the game.

To find out more about how to submit your story, click here. The deadline for submitting stories is midnight on Sunday, November 25, 2012.  So don’t wait – tell us your story now!

About the American Lung Association & COPD

The American Lung Association has helped provide information and support to people with lung diseases, for over a century. Every day, and especially during COPD Awareness Month, we need to reach out to those at risk and urge them to get tested. If you are a current or former smoker and/or have any symptoms of COPD, get tested as soon as possible. Luckily, the test, called spirometry, is simple and quick. If someone you love is a current or former smoker with symptoms, urge them to get tested too.
