Iowa’s Fight For Air Walk Triumphs Over Rain

(October 17, 2012)

Des Moines, IA - The American Lung Association in Iowa hosted the annual Fight for Air Walk, on Saturday, October 13, in Principal Park. The Walk drew 37 teams and 450 participants and volunteers, who enjoyed themselves in spite of a cool, soggy start to the day. Teams and individuals raised nearly $40,000 for the American Lung Association.

The weather broke in time for the 8:00 a.m. start, and walkers were able to complete both the one-mile and 3.1-mile route. Pre- and post-walk activities were moved indoors to the Principal Park baseball field concourse.

“Many of our participants walk in honor or in memory of a loved one,” explains Micki Sandquist, Executive Director of the American Lung Association in Iowa.  “They fundraise in hopes of finding new treatments or a cure for lung diseases like asthma, COPD and lung cancer.
We are so grateful to everyone who walked, donated, sponsored and volunteered to make this a wonderfully successful event, in spite of the rain.”

The revenue generated from the Walk will fund lung disease research, as well as programs and services for those who suffer from lung disease. The next American Lung Association event in Iowa is the Fight for Air Climb, to be held April 7, 2013 in downtown Des Moines. Learn more at FightforAirClimb.org.
