Iowa Celebrates 5th Anniversary Smokefree

On July 1, Iowa will celebrate the five-year anniversary of the Smokefree Air Act (SFAA). To celebrate five years smokefree, the American Lung Association in Iowa and Above+Beyond Cancer co-sponsored a poster contest for Middle and High School youth. Students could pick between three different topics to display in their artwork: 1) What is clean air? 2) How has the Smokefree Air Act benefitted you? and 3) What are the benefits of the Smokefree Air Act?

Fifteen schools participated with a total of 987 entries from across Iowa. The judges were impressed with the quality and content of the posters. With this awareness, it was our hope that the classroom teachers were able to discuss the dangers of tobacco use and secondhand smoke, and the benefits of the Smokefree Air Act.

Judging was held at the American Lung Association in Iowa's office in Des Moines on May 22.
