This position is funded by a grant from the Iowa Department of Public Health’s Tobacco Prevention and Control office with funds originating in the Master Settlement Agreement. The service area for the grant covers five counties in central Iowa: Polk, Dallas, Madison, Warren and Jasper counties. Three goals are addressed by the grant: (1) Prevent the initiation of tobacco use among young people; (2) Promote cessation among young people and adults; and (3) Eliminate nonsmokers’ exposure to second-hand smoke. The work of the grant is carried out with the cooperation of a county coalitions and partners.


  • Establish relationships with businesses and community leaders and move them toward implementing tobacco-free policies.
  • Offer cessation programs and Quitline Iowa information to businesses for improving their tobacco policies.
  • Establish and build youth tobacco prevention groups, including but not limited to regular meetings, incorporating the youth into activities of the grant.
  • Grassroots development and coalition building.
  • Implement policy systems change in the community through smoke-free multi-unit housing, tobacco-free parks and other policy changes.
  • Carry out other duties as assigned.


Health, Wellness or Tobacco prevention and control experience; bachelor’s degree required. Experience working with community groups; experience with public speaking and use of media; excellent written communication skills; knowledge of public advocacy and policy change; computer literacy; non-tobacco user; must have a valid driver’s license and agree to a background check.
