The American Lung Association in Indiana is seeking a contract position that will support coalition development and build the capacity of three or more funded Tobacco Prevention and Cessation partnerships in northwest Indiana in the effective implementation of all activity plan objectives in an area of the state with significant unmet tobacco need (serving Lake, Porter, LaPorte, and St. Joseph Counties).

This is a 6-month contract position, beginning on or about February 1, 2014.


  • Developing relationships with local groups, community leaders, public officials and media;
  • Assisting in creating and implementing coalition development plans;
  • Accessing resources and garnering community support;
  • Recruiting community based organizations and residents to participate in coalition activities;
  • Making informational presentations about the coalition’s priorities whenever possible;
  • Organizing community forums to educate and mobilize target populations, especially young adults;
  • Developing and implementing grassroots advocacy events and trainings that advance coalition missions;
  • Assisting in the development of fact sheets, press releases, action alerts and other written materials that effectively communicate coalition objectives in a concise manner;
  • Updating the coalition website on an ongoing basis;
  • Identifying and developing opportunities for grassroots outreach efforts;
  • Creating, updating and maintaining coalition  grassroots database;
  • Keeping informed about scientific research and initiatives related to smokefree air.


  • Committed to tobacco prevention & cessation, particularly smokefree air;
  • Familiar with the NW Indiana Region;
  • Able to communicate (verbal and written) and work effectively with volunteers, staff, coalition members, and intergenerational groups;
  • Able to take initiative, think strategically, work cooperatively with a diverse group of people, and share responsibility and credit;
  • Able to manage details and follow through with a minimum amount of direct supervision;
  • Strong time management skills and the ability to work under pressure;
  • Experience in managing several projects simultaneously and the flexibility to move back and forth between projects when necessary;
  • Strong administrative skills and ability to keep orderly electronic and hard copy files;
  • Able to supervise and motivate volunteers;
  • Experience in planning, promoting and executing events;
  • Able to identify opportunities for outreach to and coordination with allies;
  • Flexibility to work occasional irregular hours, including evenings and weekends. Current Indiana driver's license and access to a car a must;
  • B.A./B.S. degree in the field of public policy, political science, communications, public relations, public health or related field preferred;
  • Ability to produce reports and presentations using Excel, PowerPoint and other computer-based technologies;
  • Experience in mobilizing key constituents, developing leadership and building grassroots support (preferred);
  • Experience in group facilitation and coalition building skills (preferred).
