The American Lung Association in California has worked tirelessly to improve lung health and prevent lung disease. We educate millions of people about asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), help smokers quit their addiction, secure policies to improve air quality and reduce the impact of climate change, and fund research on lung disease that could lead to better treatments and possibly cures.

Our work is possible through your generous donations. If you are ready to make a donation now, you can go to our online donation form. There are also a variety of ways you can donate. Your financial support goes a long way in helping Americans breathe easier.

Here are the facts:

  • Lung disease is the third leading cause of death in the U.S.
  • Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S. – more than breast, colorectal, prostate, and pancreatic cancers combined.
  • Asthma is the number one chronic disease of children. Nearly five million Californians have asthma, including nearly one million children.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S., but most people don’t even know they have it.
  • Californians breathe the worst air in the nation, with 90 percent of us living in areas with unhealthy air.
  • Every year, more than 36,000 California kids will start smoking. Preventing youth smoking saves lives, since 90 percent of smokers began smoking by the age of 18.

This is why we are fighting for air. With your help, we can reduce these statistics for a better, healthier California.
