Susan Griffin, Chair

Ms. Griffin is a commercial real estate broker and property manager who has volunteered with the American Lung Association in California in both the Bay Area and in Sacramento. She helped secure the sites for the Fight For Air Climb events in San Francisco and Sacramento.


David Pogue, Vice-Chair

Mr. Pogue is the National Director for Sustainability & Institutional Development at CB Richard Ellis where he manages the development, introduction, and implementation of sustainable practices and policies across the Americas. He is responsible for the introduction of CBRE's Sensible Sustainability program, which includes the endorsement of the EPA Energy Star® program.




Stephen Legg, Treasurer

Mr. Legg is an Audit Partner at Grant Thornton in San Francisco with more than 19 years of public accounting experience. He has extensive experience in serving commercial enterprises, both private and public in the consumer products and technology industries. Mr. Legg also is an active supporter of Grant Thornton's Greater Bay Area office community leadership team, a group dedicated to giving back to the community by partnering with various local not-for-profit organizations.




Mark Johnson, Secretary

Mr. Johnson is the Director of Investor Relations for DeNA, a mobile internet company. He previously worked as IR/Corporate Development for the biopharmaceutical company MediciNova. He specializes in management, finance, strategy, communications and development. Mr. Johnson holds an MBA from the University of California, San Diego and a BA in Economics from Cornell University. In 2007, Mr. Johnson volunteered in the San Diego office of the American Lung Association in California as a Leadership Board Member, and served as its Chair in 2009.

Lynn Paquin, Executive Director Member

Ms. Paquin joined George K. Baum & Company's Public Finance Department in 2005 and is currently an Executive Vice President and manager of the California Education Group. She has broad experience in California school district tax exempt and tax credit financings, and is responsible for developing and maintaining client and elected school board relationships, structuring and implementing finance programs and managing the firm's California bankers. Ms. Paquin is involved in state and local education associations including the California School Board Association and California Association of School Business Officials. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Boston University and a Master's of Public Administration from Columbia University.

Marsha Ramos, Immediate Past-Chair

Ms. Ramos, a life-long resident of Burbank, recently concluded eight years of service as an elected official, including two terms as mayor of Burbank. She is Vice President of Geosystemns Inc., which provides consulting services in geotechnical, environmental and land development. She volunteers for the American Lung Association, Family Promise of the East San Fernando Valley, Catholic Charities of Los Angeles-San Fernando Region and is a member of Woodbury University President's Advisory Council.

Debra Ashby, RN

Ms. Ashby is a Senior Public Information Specialist for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, working closely with representatives from government, business, environmental, and health organizations to improve air quality and protect the public's health. She contributes many hours each year to the Orange County office of the American Lung Association in California, where she has served on the volunteer leadership board since 2004. She also regularly participates in environmental preservation and restoration efforts near her home in Newport Beach, and with the Big Sisters of Orange County.


Hassan Bencheqroun, MD

Dr. Bencheqroun is a physician at Pacific Pulmonary Medical Group in Riverside. A native of Morocco, he trained in the field of internal medicine at the SUNY-affiliated Wilson Memorial Hospital, and in the fields of lung disease and critical care medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine affiliate St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Boston. Dr. Bencheqroun further trained in the field of Interventional Minimally Invasive Pulmonary Medicine. He chairs the steering committee for Pulmonary Physiology, Function and Rehabilitation at the American College of Chest Physicians, and has been honored as a top peer reviewer for the Annals of Internal Medicine. In addition, he maintains several social media outlets dedicated to informing the community on important health related issues.



Cheryl Calhoun

Ms. Calhoun is the Managing Director for CBIZ MHM, LLC, specializing in business management, business consulting, tax, and financial planning for small to medium sized businesses and high net worth individuals. Ms. Calhoun is involved in various community organizations, specifically on philanthropy for disadvantaged women and children. She sits in the Advisory Board for Dress for Success as well as a woman-centric networking organization called the Broads Circle. She also is a Board Member for both the Urban Compass, an after school program for underprivileged youth, and Minnie House, a drug and alcohol abuse center.


David Tom Cooke, MD

Dr. Cooke is an Assistant Professor of Thoracic Surgery at the University of California, Davis Medical Center specializing in general thoracic surgery. His research interests include clinical studies on oncologic trials, surgical outcomes, and surgical education. Dr. Cooke is actively involved in student mentoring at UC Davis as well as various community organizations in the Sacramento area. Dr. Cooke has firsthand knowledge of the air quality problems in our state because aside from being a thoracic surgeon with patients suffering from lung disease, he suffered from childhood asthma and his father is battling adult onset asthma.



Afif El-Hasan, MD

Dr. El-Hasan is a Pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente in Orange County, and has been an active member of the Kaiser Asthma Care Management Team for over 13 years which strives to optimize the care of thousands of Kaiser patients who suffer from asthma in Orange County. He also serves as Co-Chairman of the Culturally Responsive Care Committee for Kaiser Orange County. Dr. El-Hasan has served on the Orange County Leadership Board of the American Lung Association in California for over 10 years, and was the 2008 recipient of the American Lung Association in California's Outstanding Medical Achievement Award. He is a member of the Environmental Justice Committee at the Southern California Air Quality Management District, which addresses poor air quality in low-income areas of Southern California.  


Billy Kim

Mr. Kim is a Senior Manager in the San Francisco office of PricewaterhouseCoopers with over nine years of experience providing audit services to healthcare and not-for-profit organizations as well as large multinational public companies within the energy and geothermal power industry. He also is a leader in the PwC San Francisco Office Diversity Council and has also been involved in various company and client-sponsored volunteer events such as the San Francisco Food Bank, United Way, and the San Francisco AIDS Walk among others. 



David Madsen

Mr. Madsen is a Senior Public Information Specialist with the South Coast Air Quality Management District, where he serves as the agency's regional representative to governments, communities, educational, health organizations, and the public in 17 cities in the Western Riverside County area. He also conducts outreach for the agency to help promote better air quality and improve lung health in the Inland Empire, which has some of the worst air pollution in the nation. Mr. Madsen has been a longtime volunteer for the American Lung Association in California. He has volunteered in the Lung Association's Inland Empire office since 2003 as a Leadership Board Member, and served also on the Lung Association's Governing Board from 2005-2012, prior to his return in 2014.

Malissa Hathaway McKeith

Ms. McKeith is a partner at LEWIS Brisbois where she chairs the Land Use and Environmental Department. LEWIS is the 2nd largest law firm in California with 26 offices throughout the United States. She also is the Founder and President of Citizens United for Resources and the Environment Inc., a 501(c)(3), which empowers local communities through research and advocacy to ensure accountability in government decisions over natural resource and land use management. Ms. McKeith is particularly concerned about increased air pollution resulting from the decline of the Salton Sea, and the impact on high asthma rates in the Imperial and Coachella Valleys.


Stephen O'Kane

Mr. O'Kane recently began a consulting career after 25 years of leadership positions in healthcare organizations. He works with hospitals, medical groups, and community health centers to support them with strategic planning, leadership development and project management. Mr. O'Kane volunteered at the Rancho Family YMCA where he served as Board Chair for five years. He currently serves as Board Vice President at the Rest Haven Foundation in San Diego.


Sue Padernacht

Ms. Padernacht is President of Ncline Leadership Strategies, a management consulting firm providing executive coaching, leadership development, team facilitation, and talent strategy consulting services. With 28 years of experience, her clients range from multinationals to emerging growth companies. She is a Lecturer in the MBA programs at UC Irvine where she teaches Talent Strategy, Executive Leadership and Negotiations, and was awarded the 2011 Excellence in Teaching Award, Executive MBA Program. She received her Master's in Organizational Psychology at Columbia University, Teachers College.

Dr. Robert Sawyer

Dr. Sawyer is the Class of 1935 Professor of Energy Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley. He also is a Partner at Sawyer Associates, a consulting company dealing with air pollution and higher education policy. Dr. Sawyer has worked on air pollution and energy issues at the international, national, state, and local level. He served as Chair of the California Air Resources Board from 2005-2007. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

Ms. Strenn has been a professional in local government management for over 30 years. She has served as the chief executive of 5 cities in California over sixteen years and has been the executive director of redevelopment agencies in 4 cities. She is an AICP Certified Planner and is credentialed through the International City/County Managers Association. Ms. Strenn is an Advisory Board Member of the Planning, Design and Construction Institute for CAL POLY University - San Luis Obispo and served also as Executive Board Member for the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation and Past Board President of Public Service Skills, Inc.

Kristi VandenBosch

Ms. VandenBosch is the Chief Digital Officer for Meredith Xcelerated Marketing, and leads its Los Angeles-based digital agency, Genex. Her integrated marketing services background has led to roles on global marketing teams for brands such as Nissan, Infiniti, Sony and Pioneer, and her expertise ranges from automotive to packaged goods, consumer electronics to financial services, and e-commerce to fashion. She is an advisor to a number of technology companies on the west coast, and a mentor at tech start-up incubator StartEngine. Ms. VandenBosch works with a number of universities, as well as the American Association of Advertising Agencies, on integrated marketing education programs, and is a frequent speaker on the influence of technology on culture and politics.

Mr. Winter has thirty-six years of demonstrated management and executive experience in senior leadership positions in hospitals and health systems. He has a progressive track record in multi-facility management, market-based strategic leadership and performance improvement. Mr. Winter's expertise is in business development, merger and acquisition activities.
