The American Lung Association in California is seeking an Advocacy Coordinator to join its Los Angeles office and work in conjunction with its Center for Tobacco Policy & Organizing. The ideal candidate will be energetic, highly motivated, and detail orientated, with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal. This is a mostly grant-funded position.

FTE: 1.0 (37.5 hrs/week)

SALARY: Salary commensurate with experience, plus full benefits package

Under the direction of the Advocacy Manager and working as a member of the American Lung Association in California's Center for Tobacco Policy & Organizing (Center), the Advocacy Coordinator will provide strategic campaign assistance to tobacco coalitions and advocacy and program staff throughout California working on tobacco control issues. The ideal candidate will be familiar with community organizing principles and strategies such as the Midwest Academy strategy chart and will provide technical assistance and training to create a prescriptive and disciplined approach to community organizing that will succeed in promoting local policy change. 


Essential Functions:

  • Attend strategy sessions, coalition meetings and city council hearings where appropriate to ensure the success of campaign objectives.
  • Work as an integral member of the American Lung Association in California's Center for Tobacco Policy & Organizing and as an integrated member of the Lung Association's Los Angeles office.
  • Work closely with the Center's Director, Advocacy Manager and Organizing Consultant to provide seamless campaign and organizing technical assistance throughout California. Activities will include strategy sessions, trainings, policy analysis, materials development and other related support services.
  • Assist with tracking local tobacco control policies and developing policy resources for communities working to adopt tobacco control policies, such as smokefree parks and smokefree housing policies
  • Maintain records of project contacts, tracking progress on campaigns.
  • Engage in other Lung Association duties as assigned. 


Position Requirements:

  • Minimum education of a B.A. or B.S. degree.
  • Experience of two to five years working in community outreach, community organizing, public health advocacy, and public policy development.
  • Exceptional people skills and an ability to work effectively with diverse populations (economic, cultural, and social).
  • Strong verbal, analytical and written skills, including the ability to write policy and advocacy materials.
  • Proven ability to work with a wide variety of organizations and settings, including public health and tobacco control organizations and coalitions.
  • Highly organized with excellent attention to detail, accuracy and quality.
  • Knowledge of computer skills necessary and must be web and social media savvy.
