The Smokefree Anchorage Coalition (SFAC) was formed in 1999 by concerned community members and organizations to monitor and promote clean indoor air in the Municipality of Anchorage. SFAC led the drive for a clean indoor air ordinance in 2000 that included restaurants, and again in 2006 to make every workplace in Anchorage smokefree. The steering committee of the SFAC is comprised of individuals from the American Lung Association of the Mountain Pacific, American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network, American Heart Association, and AARP.

Anchorage Municipal Ordinance 16.65

Anchorage municipal law prohibits smoking inside any enclosed place of business within the municipality. To prevent smoke from entering covered buildings, smoking is also prohibited within 20 feet of any door or window. Complaints about violations of Anchorage's ordinance can be filed with the municipality online here or by calling 907.343.4200 during regular business hours.

Smokefree Housing

It is the aim of the Smokefree Anchorage Coalition that there is smokefree multiunit housing available for the 77% of Anchorage residents that prefer it.

Residents:

When seeking multiunit housing in Anchorage, be sure to tell the property owners that you prefer to rent and purchase smokefree! If your association or apartment community isn't smokefree already, the Alaska Smokefree Housing Partnership (ASHP) has developed some tools to help you.
