Tobacco Control

The American Lung Association in Alaska Tobacco Prevention and Control Program is working diligently to "prevent lung disease and promote lung health" in the Greatland with efforts centered upon four primary goals:

  • Preventing youth from beginning to smoke
  • Supporting and promoting quitting tobacco in those currently addicted
  • Preventing exposure of nonsmokers to secondhand smoke
  • Identification and elimination of health disparities among populations disproportionately affected by tobacco use

Environmental Policy Change

Smokefree Anchorage Coalition (SFAC)

ALAA currently coordinates the Smokefree Anchorage Coalition, a partnership of organizations and committed individuals working towards securing the right to breathe tobacco-free air in Anchorage. The SFAC successfully advocated for smokefree Anchorage restaurants in 2000, and then worked towards making all workplaces smokefree in 2006. Currently, the SFAC is coordinating public education campaigns around enforcement of the smokefree workplaces ordinance and helping individuals seeking smokefree homes in multi-unit housing. For assistance in the Anchorage bowl, please contact our office at 276-5864 or email the coalition coordinator.

Tobacco Cessation

Freedom From Smoking

The American Lung Association's Freedom From Smoking® (FFS) program is for adults who are ready to quit smoking. Because most people know that smoking is dangerous to their health, the program focuses almost exclusively on how to quit, not why to quit. The ALA in Alaska conducts periodic facilitator trainings for Freedom From Smoking.

Contact the office at 276-5864 for additional information on scheduling a training. Scholarships for the training and materials may be available as resources permit.

Freedom From Smoking Online

Freedom From Smoking® Online, or FFS Online, is a program specifically designed for adults, like you, who want to quit smoking. It’s an adaptation of the American Lung Association’s gold standard, group clinic that has helped thousands of smokers to quit for good. Please visit http://www.ffsonline.org/ for more information and to sign up for the program.

Youth Prevention

Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU)

Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU) is a peer-education program in which middle and high school students are trained to teach elementary school students about the hazards of tobacco use. Call 276-5864 or email to inquire about training pricing and availability.

NOT on Tobacco (NOT)

N-O-T is the American Lung Association's voluntary program to help teens

  • Stop smoking or reduce the number of cigarettes they smoke.
  • Increase their healthy lifestyle behaviors.
  • Improve their life-management skills
