Harold P. Wimmer

President and CEO - American Lung Association effective February 1, 2013

Harold P. Wimmer has been appointed as President and CEO of the American Lung Association, a leading national voluntary public health organization, working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. Mr. Wimmer will assume the role of President and CEO on February 1, 2013.

Mr. Wimmer began his career with the American Lung Association of Illinois in 1978. Following the merger of the Illinois and Iowa Lung Associations, Mr. Wimmer served as their CEO for 15 years. He played a key role in the process to merge seven states into what is now the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest, where he has served as President and CEO since its creation in 2005. The ALAUM is the largest region in the nation and operates under a $21.9M budget.

As President/CEO of this regional organization, comprised of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin, Mr. Wimmer has had primary responsibilities for carrying out the strategic plans and policies established by the Board of Directors. He has been responsible for the executive operations of the Association including: organizational growth and development, fiscal management, marketing, fund raising, public policy, program services and board development.

In his tenure as CEO, Mr. Wimmer increased the organization's investment in the mission, delivering 88 percent of every dollar to vital programs and services and reaching more than two million people per year. His work in corporate and partnership development resulted in increased revenue for the nationwide organization. Additionally, he provided the strategic leadership required to pass comprehensive smokefree laws in six of the seven states in the Upper Midwest.

Mr. Wimmer was also the driving force behind the creation of the American Lung Association Lung HelpLine, a toll-free resource serving the entire country, staffed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists and tobacco cessation specialists who assist callers with lung health issues and tobacco cessation guidance.

At the national American Lung Association level, Mr. Wimmer has been an active member of the Congress of Lung Association Staff (CLAS) since 1979. He served as the CLAS President (2006-2008), served as a member of the CLAS Governing Council and has Chaired both the Awards and Scholarship Review Committees. Mr. Wimmer also served as a member of the National ALA's Revenue Generation Committee.

Mr. Wimmer earned a B.S. in Community Health and an M.S. in Health Administration & Policy from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He has been an active alumni member at U of I, serving on the Applied Health Sciences Alumni Board from 2002 -2008. Mr. Wimmer received the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois, College of Applied Health Sciences.
