Summary:

The American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest (ALAUM) is a voluntary health organization serving a multi-state area including Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin.  Our mission is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. The American Lung Association has been fighting for the lung health of all Americans since 1904.  Today, the Lung Association fights to reduce smoking, clean the air we breathe, and find cures for lung disease.

Job Summary: 

The Executive Director is responsible for sustaining ALA programs and services in Nebraska.  Serving as the lead development officer for the ALAUM in Nebraska, the Executive Director will oversee the implementation of programs approved by the ALAUM Board of Directors. As a member of the ALAUM Management Team, the Executive Director’s responsibilities and goals are compatible with the performance targets outlined in the ALAUM strategic plan.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and engage volunteers through an effective Local Leadership Board (LLB) and Event Leadership Committees to serve as advocates and to assist in carrying out fundraising efforts in support of the Association’s mission. 
  • Develop and implement the fundraising efforts pursuant to the development goals for the ALAUM in Nebraska including but not limited to: signature special events, individual special gifts, corporate giving, and grants. 
  • Increase unrestricted support from individual donors, corporate partners and event participants. 
  • Lead nationally-designed Signature Cause Campaign activities throughout Nebraska.  Supervise area Development staff and nurture effective relationships among all Nebraska employees and foster a spirit of camaraderie and mission. 
  • Assist Chief Mission Officer in advocating for the ALAUM vision throughout Nebraska. 
  • Implement a comprehensive communications plan that includes both public relations and marketing elements designed to enhance the Association’s ability to raise charitable gifts and to establish the Association as a vital charitable organization in the community. 
  • Submit monthly progress reports including accomplishments, media coverage, fund raising progress, and specific needs to the SVP, Development. 
  • Implement portions of ALAUM strategic plan, annual plan or work, legislative agenda and related documents which apply to area.  Identify and establish strategic and sustained relationships with key business leaders, individual donors, event participants, top government officials and community leaders.
  • Participate in training opportunities, including regional conferences, local continuing education courses, and other meetings, pending available funds. 
  • Work closely with the SVP, Development to develop annual revenue budget.  Monitor budget and exercise control over expenditure of funds. 
  • Maintain summaries of LLB meetings, documents, and files. 
  • Assume responsibility for Nebraska programs/projects as assigned by the SVP, Development and/or the President/CEO.  Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the SVP, Development or CEO.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from accredited four-year college or university or cogent equivalent.  Master's degree preferred. 
  • Six to eight years of successful fundraising experience and effective work with leadership volunteers. 
  • At least three years strong supervisory and management experience in the non-profit sector. 
  • Proven track record in corporate development. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Excellent analytical and organizational skills. 
  • Excellent people and leadership skills, with an ability to coach, motivate and develop staff and volunteers.
