Nebraska Legislative Priorities

Nebraska's legislative priorities are as follows:

  • Tobacco Control
Working in close alliance with the American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and the Campaign for Tobacco Free Kids, the lung association is pressing the Nebraska Unicameral for a substantial increase in the excise tax on tobacco.  (The effort does not include consideration of the excise tax on snuff which was recently addressed in legislation.)  Introduced legislation called for an increase of $1.35 per pack of cigarettes (from the current $.64 per pack) and a comparable increase on other forms of tobacco.
  • Tobacco Prevention Funding
A portion of the proceeds from a substantial tobacco tax increase in Nebraska would be directed to statewide efforts for comprehensive tobacco control.  Funding for the comprehensive program was cut 17% for the upcoming fiscal year.
