About Us
.
The American Lung Association, Plains-Gulf Region is dedicated to the prevention, control and cure of lung disease, the third leading cause of death in the United States. We work to prevent, control and cure lung diseases such as asthma, lung cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, influenza and pneumonia, and we fight for tobacco control and clean air through education, research and advocacy.
We are aware that lung diseases and breathing problems are the leading causes of infant deaths in the United States today, and asthma is the leading serious chronic childhood illness. Lung disease death rates continue to increase while other leading causes of death have declined. The American Lung Association has long funded vital research on the causes of and treatments for lung disease. We are the foremost defender of the Clean Air Act and laws that protect citizens from secondhand smoke and other environmental air pollution.
The American Lung Association is the oldest voluntary health organization in the United States. Founded in 1904 to fight tuberculosis, the American Lung Association today fights lung disease in all its forms, with special emphasis on asthma, tobacco control and environmental health. The American Lung Association is funded by contributions from the public, along with gifts and grants from corporations, foundations and government agencies.
The American Lung Association, Plains-Gulf Region serves the communities of Alabama, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.
