Joseph A. Bencivenga

Joseph A. Bencivenga is President of Step-By-Step Charitable Foundation, which he formed to put an end to cancer causing diseases by raising funds through active sports; marathons, cycling events (century rides), and triathlons.  The Foundation’s purpose is to provide funding at a local level for patient advocacy groups nationwide in order to benefit patients and their families. Joe raises funds by increasing the awareness of and profiling well-deserving cancer research and funding charities.  In 2012 and 2013, the Step-By-Step Foundation has selected the American Lung Association of the Northeast as its charity to profile and raise funds for as it continues to focus its efforts on raising funds to eradicate lung cancer – the number one cancer killer of both men and women.

When asked why the foundation has chosen to focus on lung cancer two years in a row, Bencivenga explained that the decision was simple. “If you need to choose something, why not choose something that affects most Americans,” said Bencivenga. “While cancer spreads out all across America, lung cancer seems to keep growing each year. “  Working to end lung cancer is also personal.  His wife’s best friend, Lucette, was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 2011. “It hit our family like a tidal wave as the word spread all about her. Within nine weeks of finding out she had lung cancer – Lucette was gone.”

In 2012 alone, the Step-By-Step Charitable Foundation raised more than $8,000 to benefit the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s research, education and advocacy on behalf of people suffering from lung cancer and other lung diseases. Additionally, the Foundation’s donation will fund the addition of three names, including Lucette’s, to the Lung Association’s donor wall in New York City.  The wall remembers those who have been lost to lung disease and recognizes those who have been instrumental in the Lung Association’s mission to save lives by preventing lung disease and improving lung health. This year the Foundation hopes to raise even more.  In line with their long tradition of raising funds through active sports, Foundation members will raise funds by climbing in the Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb at One Penn Plaza on February 9.  Additionally, much of the funds raised at the Foundation’s other events during the year will flow to the Lung Association.

The American Lung Association of the Northeast is grateful to Joe Bencivenga and to the Step-By-Step Foundation for their generosity in supporting our mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.   We are fortunate to have dedicated volunteers like Joe and are honored to feature him as our Volunteer in the Spotlight.
