“In The Air”: An update on the Maine Healthy Air Campaign

(January 2, 2013)

The Healthy Air Campaign is off to a great start in 2013! We’d like to welcome one of our newest Healthy Air Coalition members to the fold, Mid Coast Hospital! Mid Coast Hospital formally joined our efforts to protect and defend the Clean Air Act and we are excited to have them on board. We would also like to welcome MaineHealth to the Healthy Air Coalition. We anticipate 2013 to be a busy year for outdoor air quality issues, and look forward to working with you along the way.

The coalition in now includes 54 health care and public health organizations and has generated over a thousand contacts with Maine’s members of Congress on important air quality issues.  As a result, we have helped defeat several dangerous proposals that were considered by the U.S. House and Senate, and we have shown overwhelming support for new and improved standards for mercury, carbon, soot, and cross-state air pollution.  This month, we are meeting with Maine’s members of Congress to encourage them to protect and defend the Clean Air Act in the upcoming legislative session.

Do you have a story about how air quality has impacted you or a family member or friend? Please share it with us!  As we work to educate lawmakers on the importance of strong air quality standards, there is nothing more effective than sharing a real story of someone living with asthma, lung disease, or other health conditions that are caused or worsened by air pollution.  Your story could make a big difference – contact the Maine Healthy Air Campaign at MEHealthyAir@lungne.org.

You can also get involved by writing letters to the editor, contacting lawmakers by phone or email, joining our “On Call for Healthy Air” team of health professionals, or “liking” our Facebook page at www.facebook/MEHealthyAir.

The Maine Healthy Air Campaign will continue to defend and protect the Clean Air Act and advocate for strong air quality standards that improve health, reduce chronic disease, and lower costs for families and businesses in every corner of Maine.

We hope you will join us.  Thanks for everything you do to fight for healthy air.
