N-O-T success


Not On Tobacco (N-O-T) is the American Lung Association’s voluntary program to help teens aged 14 to 19:

  • Quit smoking completely or reduce the number of cigarettes smoked
  • Increase healthy lifestyle behaviors
  • Improve life skills

Major Characteristics of N-O-T

  • Consists of a curriculum of 10 sessions implemented by teachers, counselors, nurses and other health educators.
  • Specifically designed and tested for the teen population
  • Uses a total-health approach: offers advice on healthy behaviors, stress management, and life skills.
  • Includes a mental health referral protocol
  • Supports youth involvement

Vermont offers three free programs for Vermont teen smokers:

  • Quit online at 802Quits.org (Ages 13 and over)
  • Quit by phone: 1-800-QUIT-NOW (Ages 13 and over)
  • Quit in person: 1-800-LUNG-USA to find out how N-O-T can be implemented in your school
  • National Cancer Institute text option: teen.smokefree.gov

The ALA in Vermont offers facilitator training and stipends to schools and community organizations to implement N-O-T.
