West Warwick Firefighters Ready for Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb in Providence on February 23

Chris Cahoon and his team will climb with their gear

On Saturday February 23, the American Lung Association will be hosting its fifth annual “Peak the Plaza” Fight for Air Climb.  This challenging event is taking place at One Financial Plaza in Providence and the funds raised support the American Lung Association’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. Chris Cahoon, one of the members of the West Warwick Fire Department, says he and his team are up to the challenge.

When asked what drives him in doing the climb, Cahoon said it’s “because it is a wonderful cause and it’s great to give back to the community.” He said he also participates because he knows a lot of firefighters who suffer from lung problems because of their job.  In addition to being a fundraiser, the event is also a friendly competition between the different fire departments.

Cahoon and his team of firefighters have been participating in the Fight for Air Climb for five years. Since then, their team has expanded to over ten members.   They first heard about the Fight for Air Climb that firefighters do in Seattle and became eager to participate locally.

Cahoon’s team has been putting in a lot of extra work to get prepared for the Peak the Plaza. “We have stairs in the firehouse to practice and we climb high rises in the community,” he said. “We all train together and motivate and encourage each other.” Practicing for this event has prepared the West Warwick firefighter team to climb the 29 stories in Providence on February 23.

As a team captain in the past, Cahoon said that “ it is rewarding to see everyone come together and challenge themselves.” The West Warwick Fire Department has a goal to raise $2,500 from donations from their family and friends.
