Trailblazers Academy to “Tackle Trump Parc” for Third Year

Middle-school, at-risk youth will race to the top to support American Lung Association

STAMFORD, CT (September 6, 2012)

On Saturday, November 3, the American Lung Association in the Northeast and Trump Parc will host the 4th annual “Tackle Trump Parc” Fight for Air Climb. In attendance will be a group of students, aged 11 to 15, hailing from Trailblazers Academy, a public middle-school operated by Domus of Stamford.

Ryan Carey, Physical Education teacher at Trailblazers Academy, has been leading the efforts in preparing for the stairclimb. “The kids have to qualify in order to climb the stairs on event day. The stairclimb falls around the time our fitness testing must be done. It is a great motivator for them; they truly love training and getting prepared for [the stairclimb],” said Carey.

The children from Trailblazers got involved with the American Lung Association back in 2010. Jon Hoch, Chief Community Officer for Domus, stumbled upon the stairclimb and thought it would be a new and exciting challenge for the kids from Trailblazers Academy. Hoch is a cancer survivor and fitness-type events benefitting organizations like the American Lung Association has become a passion of his since his diagnosis; he strives to get the kids involved and passionate as well.

"We help kids in all our Domus programs get and stay focused on leading healthy lifestyles, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. This unique and fun event is a great addition to the year-long slate of activities we offer, and the American Lung Association is a great fitness partner," said Hoch.

Last year, Bob’s Discount Furniture sponsored an essay contest for the kids from Trailblazers who took part in the event. The kids were asked to write about why they choose not to smoke. The winner was chosen by the American Lung Association and Bob’s; the prize was a brand new bunk bed for his home.
