Escape to the Cape with the American Lung Association this September

Autumn Escape Bike Trek celebrates 30th year

(August 15, 2014)

Every fall, hundreds of people from the Northeast and beyond escape to Cape Cod to enjoy the beauty of the Massachusetts coastline while riding their bikes to support the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s mission  to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease .   This year is a special year for the Lung Association and participants alike as the Autumn Escape Bike Trek presented by Sunovion, celebrates its 30th anniversary.  The event will be held September 26-28.

One of the teams that will be riding in the Trek is Team Mohawk, led by Doug Haskins of Quincy who serves as the team’s captain.  Team Mohawk, whose 25 plus members hail from all over the Northeast and beyond, rides to support friends and family members who have been touched by lung disease and all people who have lived with, or will one day be diagnosed with,  lung disease. A visit to the team’s fundraising page shows a list entitled “Why We Ride” that now displays more than 80 names.

“Most everyone on our team rides because a friend or a family member has suffered from lung disease,” says Haskins. “When you read the list of names it’s a reminder of just how many people are affected by lung disease and how important it is to fund research that can find better treatments and cures.  My mom died from complications stemming from decades of smoking.  She was proud of the Mohawks for the work we did, and continue to do, to raise money for the fight. She lost her fight but with our help perhaps we can help others win the fight against lung disease.”

It is the personal experiences of each member of Team Mohawk and their desire to the see the Lung Association succeed in achieving its vision of a world free of lung disease that keeps the team coming back year after year.  The team, which started with three members and has grown to over 25, will be riding in their 21st Trek this fall.  The team is consistently one of the largest fundraising teams and has tasked itself with raising $32,000 in 2014.  Haskins estimates that the team has raised over $500,000 for the Lung Association over the last 21 years.

“By participating in the Trek since 1994 I have learned so much about lung disease and the wonderful things that the Lung Association does  in the fight to clean our air, educate the young and old alike, and take the necessary steps to wage a war on lung disease,”  says Haskins.  “The Lung Association has become my favorite charity and it makes me feel good to participate in the Trek to help raise awareness and needed funds."

The 2014 Autumn Escape Bike Trek kicks off at the Hilton Garden Inn in Plymouth on Friday, September 26 and rides along the coast to Provincetown, finishing Sunday afternoon. Trekkers travel 160 miles over three days and experience some of the most breathtaking sights Cape Cod has to offer, and come away with an unmatched sense of pride and camaraderie. Trekkers may also choose a two-day, 105 mile option.

Cyclists are required to raise a minimum of $500; those who raise $1,000 or more become a part of the Winner’s Circle. Members of the Winner’s Circle will receive a one-of-a-kind 2014 Autumn Escape cycling jersey, along with plenty of perks throughout Trek weekend. The 2014 Autumn Escape Bike Trek hopes to raise $300,000 to support the Lung Association’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.  For more information on the 2014 Autumn Escape Bike Trek presented by Sunovion, to register, or sign up as a volunteer, visit You may also visit the website to learn more about the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s other bike treks in Maine and New Hampshire. To support Doug Haskins and Team Mohawk, visit
