Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc. Presenting Sponsor of Lung Association’s 30th Anniversary Autumn Escape Bike Trek on Cape Cod

Team Sunovion Will Have Large Presence at this Year’s Ride September 26-28

(August 18, 2014)

Every fall, hundreds of people from New England and beyond escape to Cape Cod to enjoy the beauty of the Massachusetts coastline while riding their bikes to support the American Lung Association of the Northeast’s mission  to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease .   This year is a special year for the Lung Association, its presenting sponsor Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc. and its hundreds of participants as the Autumn Escape Bike Trek presented by Sunovion, celebrates its 30th anniversary.  The event will be held September 26-28.

Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc., a leading pharmaceutical company based in Marlborough, Massachusetts, specializes in treatments for people challenged by respiratory illness and has generously signed on as the presenting sponsor of the Autumn Escape Bike Trek (AEBT) for the second year in a row.  The company, whose origins are in the respiratory field, has been a sponsor of the AEBT for the last three years.  During that time, the AEBT has grown and so has the company’s support and participation.   The AEBT is an 'at-your-own-pace' cycling tour taking participants on a picturesque journey from Plymouth to Provincetown all to raise money supporting the fight against lung disease. Riders can choose to either cycle 105 miles over two days, or 160 miles over three.

Sunovion’s team is led by Team Captain Szymon Zietek, who has been preparing the company for the AEBT ever since last year’s Trek ended.  Under Zietek’s leadership, the team has been able to boost its membership and has doubled its fundraising goal for this year to $50,000.  To date, Team Sunovion leads all other AEBT teams in fundraising.  Zietek says getting an early jump on team recruitment and fundraising has helped significantly.

“The support of Sunovion and its employees over the last three years has been incredibly motivating,” said Zietek, who noted that the company also backs the team through internal communications and logistics assistance.  “Our colleagues are as generous as they are because, for us, it is all about doing what we can to help the patients.  Many of the patients we serve are also beneficiaries of the American Lung Association’s work, so being a part of the AEBT is a natural extension of what we do every day.  We see it as an opportunity to help out our patients in a different way while, at the same time, having a great time.”

“Sunovion is very pleased to return once again as the presenting sponsor of the Autumn Escape Bike Trek to help celebrate their 30 years of raising awareness and funds to fight respiratory disease,” said Rick Russell, Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer for Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc.  “This event is very special for all of us at Sunovion, providing another way for us to help improve the lives of those living with respiratory illnesses right here in our local community.”

“This is a special year for us as we celebrate 30 years of cycling across Cape Cod to fight all lung disease,”    said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “We’re incredibly grateful to Sunovion for their continued support of the Autumn Escape Bike Trek.   Because of Sunovion’s support, we can do even more to find better treatments and cures for lung disease that will not only extend people’s lives, but improve the quality of people’s lives.”

The 2014 Autumn Escape Bike Trek kicks off at the Hilton Garden Inn in Plymouth on Friday, September 26 and rides along the coast to Provincetown, finishing Sunday afternoon. Trekkers travel 160 miles over three days and experience some of the most breathtaking sights Cape Cod has to offer, and come away with an unmatched sense of pride and camaraderie. Trekkers may also choose a two-day, 105 mile option.

Cyclists are required to raise a minimum of $500; those who raise $1,000 or more become a part of the Winner’s Circle. Members of the Winner’s Circle will receive a one-of-a-kind 2014 Autumn Escape cycling jersey, along with plenty of perks throughout Trek weekend. The 2014 Autumn Escape Bike Trek hopes to raise $300,000 to support the Lung Association’s mission to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease.  For more information on the 2014 Autumn Escape Bike Trek presented by Sunovion or to register, or sign up as a volunteer, visit Biketreknewengland.org.
