Stamford Fire Local 786 Teams Up With Domus Kids For Charity

Firefighters support local middle-school with car wash to benefit American Lung Association

(September 27, 2012)

On Saturday, October 13, Stamford Fire Local 786 and Trailblazers Academy will team up for a car wash benefitting the American Lung Association of the Northeast.  Trailblazers Academy is a public middle-school operated by Domus of Stamford, with students ranging from 11 to 15 years old.

Trailblazers Academy got involved with the American Lung Association back in 2010. Jon Hoch, Chief Community Officer for Domus, stumbled upon the Tackle Trump Parc Fight for Air Climb in Stamford, and thought it would be a new and exciting challenge for the kids from Trailblazers. Hoch is a cancer survivor and fitness-type events benefitting organizations like the American Lung Association have become a passion of his since his diagnosis; he strives to get the kids involved and passionate as well.

“Each year the Stamford Fire Department has climbed Trump Parc and has marveled at the Trailblazers students doing the same. We want to help out in whatever way we can so that more students can experience the climb of their life,” said Jimmy Tarzia, firefighter from Stamford Fire Local 786. “If we can change just one future, it is all worth it.”

The students “train” in gym class each year to be able to tackle the stairs, and must write an essay regarding their personal commitment to not smoking. The climb impacts them greatly and teaches them the importance of healthy lungs and an active lifestyle. The car wash on October 13 will help them raise the necessary funds to be able to climb the stairs on event day, and Stamford Fire Local 786 is very enthusiastic about being involved with this community event.

The car wash will be held at Trailblazers Academy, 83 Lockwood Avenue in Stamford, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be no fee for the wash, but all are encouraged to donate toward the Domus team on behalf of the American Lung Association’s 4th annual Tackle Trump Parc Fight for Air Climb.

"We help kids in all our Domus programs get and stay focused on leading healthy lifestyles, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator. This unique and fun event is a great addition to the year-long slate of activities we offer, and the American Lung Association is a great fitness partner," said Hoch.

On November 3, 2012, participants will race, run, or walk up the 571 stairs to benefit the American Lung Association of the Northeast. Each climber is responsible for a $35 registration fee and a $100 fundraising minimum due by event day. Registration for Tackle Trump Parc is available at climbofyourlife.org.

Tackle Trump Parc is made possible by the support of generous sponsors like Kindred Healthcare, Trump Parc Stamford, SBC Restaurant & Brewery, Stamford Hospital, Statoil Inc., and 95.9 THE FOX. The American Lung Association offers sponsorship opportunities at various levels, each with benefits and incentives for potential sponsors.
