American Lung Association of the Northeast Joins in Nationwide Launch of LUNG FORCE, a Public Health Initiative to Fight Lung Cancer in Women

The American Lung Association of the Northeast joined forces with Lung Associations across the country and national presenting sponsor, CVS Caremark, to launch LUNG FORCE, a new initiative to make lung cancer in women a public health priority, drive policy change and increase research funding.  LUNG FORCE is a national health education movement with the singular mission of uniting women to stand together against lung cancer and for lung health

Why LUNG FORCE?

Lung cancer is the #1 cancer killer of women, killing almost twice as many women as any other cancer. In fact, statistics show that fewer than half of all women diagnosed with lung cancer survive one year after diagnosis.  The fact is that anyone can get lung cancer - including women who don’t currently smoke or who have successfully quit smoking.  Yet, according to new research from the American Lung Association’s Women’s Lung Health Barometer, only 1 percent of women identify lung cancer as a cancer that is top-of-mind for them. 

“The results of the Women’s Lung Health Barometer make it clear that we need to change our thinking about lung cancer,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “Make no mistake, lung cancer is a threat to each and every one of us and it’s an especially serious threat to women who are being diagnosed at frightening rates. With increased awareness and education, we know that women will join the fight against lung cancer and for lung health, and help us end this crisis in women’s health.”

As part of this week’s launch, the American Lung Association of the Northeast is mobilizing a Turquoise Takeover across the region. In the Northeast several landmarks are being lit in turquoise at various times during the week. They include Niagara Falls, the Massachusetts State House, the Rhode Island State House, TD Garden, the Bennington Battle Monument, The Electric Tower in Buffalo; Rochester City Hall; the Basketball Hall of Fame and Albany’s Times Union Center.  Additionally, several states, counties and cities in the Northeast and the U.S. have issued proclamations declaring the week of May 11 National Women’s Lung Health Week.  Kick-off events to introduce the LUNG FORCE campaign to the public are planned for this week in Boston, Providence and New York City. 

Through locally-based and nationwide efforts, LUNG FORCE will educate and empower patients and healthcare providers, focus public policy on addressing the disease and its causes, and raise critical funds for research into better detection and targeted treatments for lung cancer.   

“Lung cancer does not have to be a death sentence,” said Denise Hogan of Nyack, New York a lung cancer survivor.  “Bringing awareness to the # 1 cancer killer of women is a first step in changing the face of lung cancer and giving hope. No one deserves cancer. We need people to understand that if you have lungs, you can get lung cancer. LUNG FORCE will help us get that message out there and help save lives.”
