Depew Volunteer Fire Department Sponsors American Lung Association’s Fight for Air Climb: Buffalo

(August 28, 2013)

On March 8, 500 expected climbers will take to the stairs of One HSBC Center, located in the heart of downtown Buffalo, as part of the fourth annual Fight for Air Climb: Buffalo. The event hopes to raise $120,000 to directly benefit the American Lung Association of the Northeast. The returning team from the Depew Volunteer Fire Department has “stepped up” as official sponsors of the 2014 Fight for Air Climb: Buffalo Firefighter Challenge.

“The Firefighter Challenge is an exciting part of our Fight for Air Climbs. It is always great to see the cheers and encouraging words given to the firefighters as they ascend the stairs with anywhere from 50 to 70 pounds of gear,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “We are so thankful to the Depew Volunteer Fire Department for their continued support and for signing on as official sponsors for 2014. The funds raised at the Fight for Air Climb are vital to the work we are doing to combat lung disease and air pollution.”

The team from Depew Volunteer Fire Department, captained each year by Dawn Gauthier, is consistently one of the largest teams and always has tremendous success when it comes to their fundraising endeavors. In fact, in their history with the Fight for Air Climb in Buffalo, they have raised more than $2,500 to benefit the American Lung Association of the Northeast.

“The department has always encouraged our members to participate in the Fight for Air Climb,” said Assistant Chief Scott Wegst. “It is such a great cause and so many of our members feel a personal connection because of various friends and family members being affected by lung disease. This year, we will be sponsoring the Firefighter Challenge because we know what a great event this is and we want to showcase that and help it become even larger in any way we can.”

Teams of firefighters are encouraged to participate in the Firefighter Challenge. Firefighters will race to the top of One HSBC Center wearing full gear. The fastest team will walk away with the Fastest Fire Department Team trophy.
