On Father’s Day weekend, the American Lung Association of the Northeast will celebrate the 29th annual Trek Across Maine, with more than 2,000 cyclists taking off from Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry and finishing up at Steamboat Landing Park in Belfast. The event is the largest fundraiser for the nonprofit organization nationwide, raising $1.8 million in 2012, with a goal of $2 million for 2013.

One of the teams cycling in the event will be Charlie’s Big Wheels representing Charlie’s Motor Mall Family of Dealerships in Augusta, a sponsor of the 2013 Trek Across Maine.

Charlie’s Big Wheels has a long history with the Lung Association and the Trek. Team co-captain Cory Lathrop started riding in the event eight years ago as an individual.  He thought it was such a great event for a worthwhile cause that he brought the idea of starting a company team to his boss, Charlie Shuman, the owner of Charlie’s Motor Mall Family of Dealerships. Charlie enthusiastically agreed and the Charlie’s Big Wheels Team was born.

The team's participation and the Charlie's Family of Dealership's partnership with the Trek have grown every year since. Last year, the company generously sponsored the Trek Finish Line in Belfast enabling the Trek to give riders the experience of crossing a first-class finish line.  This year, they will additionally be sponsoring the Finish Line at Colby College.

“Our focus is to raise as much money for the American Lung Association as we possibly can while enjoying a wonderful three days with our Trek Family,” says team captain Cory Lathrop. “Over the last six years we have raised over $210,000 for the Lung Association. We are also very proud of the fact that, over the last six years, our team has raised more dollars per rider than any other team in the Trek. “

One reason Charlie’s Big Wheels is so successful at their fundraising is that they set their goals high.  This year the Big Wheels have already exceed their $40,000 goal and still have 3 weeks to go before the event. The team requires all members to raise a minimum of $1,000 each which qualifies them for membership in the Winner’s Circle, and entitles them to special perks all weekend,  including early check-in and going home with a one-of-a-kind cycling jersey, designed each year by the American Lung Association.

“Our team has attracted some really incredible people who go above and beyond,” notes Lathrop.  “Our members start raising money early and don’t stop once they’ve met their fundraising goal; they keep on fundraising right up until the Trek. Our members have held bake sales, stitched quilts and even stood outside of shopping centers to raise money for the Trek.  They are a committed group of people.”

“Charlie’s Motor Mall Family of Dealerships has been a great partner in the Trek Across Maine and we’re so grateful for both their support and the incredible energy they bring to the Trek each year,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO of the American Lung Association of the Northeast. “Our vision is to see a world free of lung disease and supporters like Charlie’s give us hope that we will one day see our vision become reality.”

On Friday, June 14, more than 2,000 will leave from Sunday River Ski Resort and make the 180-mile Trek to Belfast. Cyclists come from all over the country to be a part of the weekend. All proceeds benefit the American Lung Association and help fund valuable research, education and advocacy.
