American Lung Association celebrates volunteer appreciation week

Augusta, ME (April 19, 2012)

The week of April 15th, 2012 is recognized as National Volunteer Week. The American Lung Association celebrates their beloved volunteers year-round, but recognizes truly exceptional volunteers on this occasion.

Bill Penley has been a devoted participant, fundraiser, and volunteer for the American Lung Association’s annual Trek Across Maine for many years. “Bill is completely dedicated to our organization and the Trek as a whole. He loves all aspects of the event and goes above and beyond to offer his assistance in any way that we need,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO for the American Lung Association of the Northeast.

When Bill is not cycling the great state of Maine in support of lung disease, he spends part of Trek weekend as Safety Patrol, guiding trekkers and keeping them safe. Not only does Bill continue to come back year after year, he also brings the while family - all six of them. His family members have proven just as helpful and spirited as Bill has.

Bill spends much of the year assisting in the Trek Across Maine’s success. As a registered trekker, he goes above and beyond the required $500 fundraising minimum. Bill is also is a part of the Volunteer Recruitment Committee and often visits third party events on behalf of the non-profit organization. He brings an enthusiasm to the event that cannot be replaced.
