Volunteer Spotlight: Ann Maggio, RN

American Lung Association celebrates Volunteer Appreciation Week

Springfield, MA (April 20, 2012)

Ann MaggioThe week of April 15th, 2012 is recognized as National Volunteer Week. The American Lung Association celebrates their beloved volunteers year-round, but recognizes truly exceptional volunteers on this occasion.

Ann Maggio, RN, has been dubbed an “asthma champion” because of her work spreading asthma awareness and education throughout the greater Springfield area. “Ann sets an example for other Springfield school nurses, by providing asthma education materials for parents and children at her school and encourages other school nurses in her district to do the same. She has been instrumental in significantly increasing the number of asthma action plans on file in Springfield Public Schools,” said Jeff Seyler, President & CEO for the American Lung Association of the Northeast.

Springfield is known to have asthma rates double the state average. Ann has been readily involved with the Asthma Disparities Initiative in Springfield, an effort that the American Lung Association and the Pioneer Valley Asthma Coalition (PVAC) have been involved in. Through this initiative, she has coordinated an Open Airways for Schools (OAS) program – an American Lung Association sponsored initiative - at her school.

In addition, Ann is involved as a stakeholder in the Healthy Environment/Healthy Springfield CARE Project funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).  She attends monthly meetings to help identify, prioritize and find solutions to environmental risks in Springfield. Ann’s commitment to the mission of the American Lung Association truly sets her apart from others.
