MTS Research Fund Donation
The Research Fund allows MTS to fulfill one of its most important objectives – to support local research endeavors and make a vital investment in improving lung health through the American Lung Association’s Nationwide Research Program.
MTS has a long history of co-funding research and in 2011-2012 the MTS has been able to continue the support of the Lung Cancer Discovery Award to Kwok-Kin Wong, MD, PhD, from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA. The research: “Can the Immune System Control the Spread of Cancer?” aims to develop a better understanding of the processes involved in lung cancer progression and metastasis and may identify crucial new targets for possible new treatments.
Your contribution to the fund, paid via your registration fee, will help us to continue the support of research endeavors in the future. You will be given the opportunity to opt out of this $20 donation as part of the registration process, but we hope that you feel able to contribute.
Meeting Materials
All attendees will be given a printed program booklet/syllabus at the event which will include the agenda for the day.
For the first time this year we will be providing the slide handouts as an electronic download, for you to either print prior to the event or to keep electronically. The registration fee therefore does not include a printed slide handout on the day of the event. This initiative is to save costs and other valuable resources. However, as part of the registration process you may purchase, for an additional $5, a printed copy of the slide handout booklet for the day of the event.
Payment
Registration fees are payable strictly in advance of the meeting. Please provide your credit card details on the online registration form or send a check payable to “American Lung Association”. Registration fees are strictly non refundable in the case of cancellation, but substitutions can be made in advance of the event by sending details to sphillips@lungne.org.
Henry D Chadwick Medal
Do you know someone who is deserving of special recognition for their outstanding service in the pulmonary field? The Massachusetts Thoracic Section Annual Meeting includes the presentation of the Henry D. Chadwick Medal, which recognizes a recipient for outstanding service in the field of pulmonary disease. The deadline for submissions is Friday, January 20, 2012. To make a nomination for the 2012 Chadwick Medal a nominating letter (or email), a seconding letter (or email) and a copy of the nominee’s CV should be sent to sphillips@lungne.org by the deadline.
Scientific Abstract Awards & Best Cases
You are invited to submit your Clinical or Basic Science research abstracts for review and an opportunity to present your research to the plenary audience and be honored at the meeting with a scientific award.
We are also calling for the submission of Best Cases to be reviewed and awarded at the meeting.

After completing the educational activity participants will be able to:
• Identify the circumstances when and how a telemedicine/eICU system could be implemented to improve intensive care and identify the drawbacks of such a system.
• Describe aspects of end-of-life communication important to patients with chronic, life-limiting illnesses.
• Identify the climate change impacts on air quality and the role that heat waves play in exacerbating pulmonary disease.
• Discuss the risks and benefits of current pharmacotherapies to help smokers quit and be able to direct smokers to appropriate counseling services.
• Identify patients who should be referred to a lung transplant center and participate in post-transplant care of the lung transplant recipient.

66th Annual Meeting 2011
Thank you to all participants, speakers and exhibitors who made the 66th Annual Meeting in April 2011 such a large and vibrant gathering of health professionals. The program for the day provided an excellent educational opportunity for attendees to update their knowledge and earn CME and CEU credits, and the meeting was a great opportunity for networking.
