Kathy Boyer

There are many ways to provide support for clean air and healthy lungs - and Kathy Boyer has found her niche, pedaling more than 2,000 miles over the past 16 years in the Bike Trek to Shakertown.   The “veteran” cyclist  is the top fund raiser for this event, bringing in over $70,000 for the ALA in Kentucky since 1994.  And, as if riding her bike isn’t enough, she also helps plan the event through fundraising, committee work, sponsor recruitment, helping with information programs, getting donated door prizes, distributing promotional materials, and using her cycling skills to help with training rides.  That’s quite an impressive job description for a volunteer.

In 2010, she raised over $8,000, recruited a Bronze Sponsor, served on the planning committee and assisted as a ride captain on the event.

Kathy originally saw the event poster in a bike shop and decided to take the challenge.  She remembers that first ride as a wonderful experience – and she just kept coming back each year.  She is a special volunteer who is outgoing, dependable, enthusiastic, caring and well-liked by all (staff, volunteers and other participants).  She has participated in many bike rides and shared numerous accolades for the staff in the ALA in Kentucky (Louisville) office for putting on this top-notch event.

She is already helping to recruit sponsors for the 2011 event.

The Trek is so important to her that, when her daughter announced that she is getting married this year, Kathy asked that she please not choose the weekend of September 17, 2011, which is the weekend of this year’s Bike Trek to Shakertown.

In addition to her daughter, Kathy and her husband also have two sons and five grandchildren.

Kathy reports that her Father, who was a smoker for years, suffered from emphysema.  He passed away in 1976.  She rides in his memory.

And, what does she do when she’s not volunteering and participating in the Trek for the American Lung Association in Kentucky?  She is a stock broker/financial advisor with Stifel Nicolaus.  She is very involved in her church.  A real passion of hers is working with the refugees from Nepal who are now settled in Louisville.  Kathy’s goal is to someday do a “century ride”.

Kathy Boyer believes that her purpose in life is to serve wherever she can.  She says, “I have been so blessed with a wonderful family and friends, good health, and financial resources – and I feel it is my duty and privilege to give back wherever I can.  ALA has provided an opportunity thru the Bike Trek to Shakertown to make friends and help support the American Lung Association.  It’s a win-win.”
