Spotlight on Research: James Bridges at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Ohio

Funded with an American Lung Association Biomedical Research Grant, Dr. Bridge’s project is: Knowing Protein’s Role in Airway Remodeling May Lead to New Treatments.

Enlargement of the smooth muscle layer surrounding the airways is a common feature of many chronic lung diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.   This enlargement, which is also known as airway remodeling, is poorly understood and this research project looks at whether the HIF2a protein may play a role.  The long-term goal of this research is to identify how smooth muscle becomes dysfunctional and to develop nove treatment targets for chronic airway disease.
