Elaine Schlageter

Elaine Schlageter was honored March 2 as Community Health Charities of Kentucky held its annual volunteer awards banquet, “Champions in Health,” on March 2, at the Galt House Hotel in Louisville.  The annual event honors each member agency’s Volunteer of the Year.  The volunteers are presented with a beautiful crystal desk plaque and individually recognized for their outstanding volunteer contributions to the field of public health.

While Elaine's not a medical professional, she knows asthma.  As an asthmatic herself, and the mother of three young children with asthma — Katelyn 8, Isabelle 7, and Gareth 3 — Elaine knows all too well about the need to control asthma.

Elaine and her family have participated several years in our Asthma Walk (now the Lung Walk). Serving the last two years as family team chair, Elaine has worked hard to recruit walkers. She arranged several team recruitment visits at multiple locations and secured matching walk donations from her employer.

This year, Elaine became trained as an Asthma 1-2-3 facilitator to deliver one-hour "asthma basics" in-services to schools and community groups.  She kicked things off this fall with programs at two daycare locations, reaching about 90 staff members.

Elaine has also become a "go to" resource for media looking to do a story on asthma.  When we recently asked her to do an interview for National Public Radio, she said, "You know I can't say no to you!"  Of course, that's music to our ears.

In addition to being a mom and wife to William, her husband of 12 years, Elaine works full-time in Quality Assurance at Yum!  She is active with her children’s schools, and other various community groups.  As if that weren’t enough she is preparing to take certification exams to become a Certified Professional in Food Safety and Registered Sanitarian.  Also, she was recently accepted at Bellarmine University, where she will continue her studies for Public Health.
