What is Asthma - Watch Videos

What is Asthma?

Asthma is a chronic disease that affects airways in the lungs. Airways are tubes that carry air in and out of the lungs. When a child has asthma the inside of the airways become swollen and narrow making breathing difficult.  Asthma, like many chronic diseases cannot be cured, but can be controlled.

More than six million children under the age of 18 have asthma and one in ten children in a classroom or childcare setting are likely to have asthma.  This is why it is important to recognize the warning signs and symptoms of an attack and understand your part in helping prevent and asthma episode. With proper management, children with asthma should have few if any symptoms, however, the complications of asthma can be severe and possibly fatal.
