Janet Johnston

Between 1996 and 1997, my left lung collapsed 3 times. On New Years Eve 1997, I had lung surgery at Vanderbilt to prevent further collapses and was diagnosed with severe allergies and asthma. With treatment and medications, I have had no recurrence of collapsed lungs and my allergies and asthma have been controlled!!!! AND I have completed 5 half-marathons, 2 Chicago marathons, many 5K races, 3 sprint triathlons, and several bike rides! On a weekly basis, I'm able to ride, swim, and run and have a great quality of life without struggling to breathe!

So now, more than ever, I am thankful for the efforts of the American Lung Association. With their lung disease research, education, and advocacy, I, along with 35 million other Americans, have the opportunity to BREATHE and be active!
