Vice President, Governance
American Lung Association
Where do you live? Stanardsville, VA
Tell us a little about the work you do. I work in the Executive Office and manage our Board operations, meetings and activities. I work with and provide support for our Officers, Executive Committee and Governance Committee. I oversee our state charity registration requirements and trademarks.
How did you become interested in lungs? My first job with the Lung Association was in my native state of Mississippi in 1983. I covered one-third of the state as a field representative, delivering educational programs and fundraising events in those areas. In my 30 years with the association, it is rare for a day to go by that I don’t meet someone impacted by lung disease, poor air quality or the scourge of tobacco.
What are your interests outside of work? Eating, cooking, travel and woodworking.
What has been your greatest achievement? 33 years of marriage to my beautiful bride, Bobie.
Why do you need your lungs to be healthy? I’m at a delicate age where it’s becoming more difficult for me to claim I’m middle-aged and keep a straight face. I know that the quality of the rest of my life will be directly affected by how well I take care of my lungs.
Is there anything else you would like to share? We all have the capability to make someone’s day a little better today. A helping hand, a kind word, a warm welcome, a smile.
