Harold Wimmer

President and Chief Executive Officer

Harold P. Wimmer is National President and CEO of the American Lung Association, the nation’s oldest voluntary health association, working to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease – including asthma, COPD, influenza and especially lung cancer.

As National President and CEO, Mr. Wimmer leads the American Lung Association in its Fight For Air through education, advocacy and research. Mr. Wimmer is responsible for carrying out the strategic plans and policies established by the National Board of Directors, and directs the executive operations of the Association including: organizational growth and development, advocacy, public policy, marketing, research and program services.

Mr. Wimmer began his career with the American Lung Association of Illinois in 1978. Following the merger of the Illinois and Iowa Lung Associations, Mr. Wimmer served as its CEO for 15 years. He played a key role in the process to merge seven states (Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin) into what is now the American Lung Association of the Upper Midwest, where he served as President and CEO since its creation in 2005.

Mr. Wimmer was the driving force behind the creation of the American Lung Association Lung HelpLine, a toll-free resource serving the entire country, staffed by registered nurses, respiratory therapists and tobacco cessation specialists who assist callers with lung health issues and tobacco cessation guidance.

In his tenure as CEO of the Upper Midwest, Mr. Wimmer provided the strategic leadership required to pass comprehensive smokefree laws in six of the seven states in the Upper Midwest. Additionally, his work in corporate and partnership development resulted in increased revenue for the nationwide organization.

Mr. Wimmer earned a B.S. in Community Health and an M.S. in Health Administration & Policy from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. He has been an active alumni member at U of I, serving on the Applied Health Sciences Alumni Board from 2002 -2008. Mr. Wimmer received the 2008 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Illinois, College of Applied Health Sciences.
