Kathleen Maloney Skambis is a commercial trial and appellate lawyer in Orlando, Florida. Before leaving to practice law with her husband in 2000, Skambis was a partner in one of the oldest and largest law firms in the United States. Skambis represents individuals and businesses in commercial disputes of all kinds. She has also represented local governmental entities, including in constitutional challenges to their ordinances. Skambis holds a Bachelor of Science in Broadcasting degree from the University of Florida. She worked in the field of educational television for five years before obtaining her Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration degrees from Southern Methodist University in 1987. She is licensed to practice law in Florida and Texas.
Skambis has many and varied personal connections to the American Lung Association's mission. Among them, she was diagnosed with lung cancer in both of her lungs in 1999. Having beaten predictions of an early demise, Skambis is now passionate about the need to raise awareness of and research funding for lung cancer. She has been a Lung Association volunteer since 2008, and has served on the Board of Directors of the American Lung Association of the Southeast since 2011. Skambis has used her problem-solving and advocacy skills in a variety of ways to serve her community, including by providing many hours of pro bono legal services. In addition to her work with the American Lung Association, Skambis has served on local YMCA and public radio advisory boards and continues to serve on the board of the national adoption and infertility non-profit Creating a Family.
